Though it sounds like the name of some exotic tropical land,
the word Zingebar is actually the Latin term for ginger.
Originating in Southeast Asia, the spicy rhizome received
a warm welcome when it arrived in Europe in the 11th century
and soon became the second most highly traded spice after pepper.
In the 14th century ginger appeared on the dinner tables of the
wealthy along with salt and pepper and was so highly coveted that
a pound of the spice cost the same as a whole sheep.
